What about “The Pill”?
In our medical practice, we hear this question every day. For women wanting to postpone pregnancy, we discuss alternatives such as intrauterine devices (IUD) or the Billings ovulation method – a natural method that women can use to monitor fertility based on sensation in the vulva and the appearance and consistency of vaginal mucus discharge.
For women who do not want to conceive in the future, we educate about other options, such as a tubal ligation, the Essure method (in which small plugs are inserted into the opening of the Fallopian tubes), or vasectomy for their male partner.
For those women who remain adamant that the Pills is their choice, we continue to prescribe low-dose birth control pills up to age thirty-five for women who are nonsmokers.
