Dr. Randolph Offers the Missing Link between Belly Fat and an Increased Death Risk

Women with excess fat around their middle are at greater risk  to die from cancer and heart disease

Women who carry excess fat around their waists are at greater risk of dying early from cancer or heart disease than were women with smaller waistlines, according to a new study just released from the National Institute of Health.

C.W. Randolph, Jr. M.D, R.Ph. internationally recognized medical expert in the field of bio-identical hormone replacement and co-author of FROM BELLY FAT TO BELLY FLAT, believes "The results of this study validate my clinical experience in treating thousands of overweight patients for more than a decade. What is surprising is that this study fails to identify the underlying medical condition that predisposes women with belly fat to suffer from potentially lethal chronic diseases. The medical condition termed "estrogen dominance" is the missing link here."

Researchers followed more than 44,000 women over the course of 16 years to track their medical history and lifestyle. The majority of the women who took part in the study were white, the researchers do not know if their findings pertain to other groups of women or to men. All the women included in the study were registered nurses. At the beginning of the study the women were asked to measure their waists and hips. Every two years, the women completed questionnaires about their health, providing information about their age, activity level, smoking status, diet, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

The researchers examined the cause of death for all women who died over the course of the study. In total, 3,507 deaths occurred---of these, 1,748 were due to cancer and 751 were due to heart disease.

The researchers discovered that women with greater waist circumferences were more likely to die prematurely, particularly from heart disease, when compared to women with smaller waists. For example, women with waist size equal to or greater than 35 inches were approximately twice as likely to die of heart disease as were women with a waist size less than 28 inches, regardless of their body mass index. Similarly, women with a waist size equal to or greater than 35 inches also were twice as likely to die of cancer as were women with a waist size less than 28 inches.

According to Dr. Randolph, "Medical research shows that the average woman will gain one to two pounds around her middle between the ages of 35 and 55. The reason is that age causes a shift in hormonal production resulting in the body becoming 'estrogen dominant' at a cellular level. This condition of estrogen dominance predisposes women over 30 to pack those pounds around their waist. Also, belly fat actually produces even more estrogen therein compounding the problem."

"The good news," says Randolph, "is that women do not need to accept that it is inevitable that as they age they will gain weight, get sick and die early. In my book FROM BELLY FAT TO BELLY FLAT I outline a 3 Step Program to safely and naturally eliminate estrogen dominance via bio-identical hormone replacement, a nutritional program of specific foods and supplements that eliminate extra estrogen through the bowel and life style recommendations to keep stress and sleeplessness from sabotaging hormone balance. "

Dr. Randolph says "More research in this field is definitely warranted. My question to the NIH is why the links between estrogen dominance, weight gain, chronic disease and death risk have not been investigated before now?"

Are You A Walking PMS Nightmare?
We Can Help!

A friend of mine recently emailed me this actual letter sent to Proctor and Gamble from a woman in Austin, Tx. It's PC Magazine's  2007 editors' choice for best webmail-award-winning letter.I read it and literally rolled on the floor.  I think you will too.   Enjoy reading through it and, then, read on to see how Dr. Randolph would counsel her regarding how she might address and eliminate her most exacerbating female health concerns.

Co-Founder of The Natural Hormone Institute of America

Dear Mr. Thatcher,

I have been a loyal user of your 'Always' maxi pads for over 20 years and I appreciate many of their features. Why, without the LeakGuard Core or Dri-Weave absorbency, I'd probably never go horseback riding or salsa dancing, and I'd certainly steer clear of running up and down the beach in tight, white shorts. But my favorite feature has to be your revolutionary Flexi-Wings. Kudos on being the only company smart enough to realize how crucial it is that maxi pads be aerodynamic. I can't tell you how safe and secure I feel each month knowing there's a little F-16 in my pants .

Have you ever had a menstrual period, Mr. Thatcher? Ever suffered from the curse'? I'm guessing you haven't. Well, my time of the month is starting right now. As I type, I can already feel hormonal forces violently surging through my body. Just a few minutes from now, my body will adjust and I'll be transformed into what my husband likes to call 'an inbred hillbilly with knife skills.' Isn't the human body amazing?

As Brand Manager in the Feminine-Hygiene Division, you've no doubt seen quite a bit of research on what exactly happens during your customer's monthly visits from 'Aunt Flo'. Therefore, you must know about the bloating, puffiness, and cramping we endure, and about our intense mood swings, crying jags, and out-of-control behavior. You surely realize it's a tough time for most women. In fact, only last week, my friend Jennifer fought the violent urge to shove her boyfriend's testicles into a George Foreman Grill just b ecause he told her he thought Grey's Anatomy was written by drunken chimps.
Crazy!

The point is, sir, you of all people must realize that America is
just crawling with homicidal maniacs in Capri pants... Which brings me to the reason for my letter. Last month, while in the throes of cramping so painful I wanted to reach inside my body and yank out my uterus, I opened an Always maxi-pad, and there, printed on the adhesive backing, were these words: 'Have a Happy Period.'

Are you f------ kidding me? What I mean is, does any part of your tiny middle-manager brain really think happiness - actual smiling, laughing happiness, is possible during a menstrual period? Did anything mentioned above sound the least bit pleasurable? Well, did it, James? FYI, unless you're some kind of sick S&M freak, there will never be anything 'happy' about a day in which you have to jack yourself up on Motrin and Kahlua and lock yourself in your house just so you don't march down to the local Walgreen's armed with a hunting rifle and a sketchy plan to end your life in a blaze of glory.

For the love of God, pull your head out, man! If you have to slap a moronic message on a maxi pad, wouldn't it make more sense to say something that's actually pertinent, like 'Put down the Hammer' or 'Vehicular Manslaughter is Wrong', or are you just picking on us?

Sir, please inform your Accounting Department that, effective
immediately, there will be an $8 drop in monthly profits, for I
have chosen to take my maxi-pad business elsewhere. And though I will certainly miss your Flex-Wings, I will not for one minute miss your brand of condescending b--ls--t. And that's a promise I will keep.

Always.

Dr. Randolph’s Reply:

Dear Wendi,

Unfortunately, I hear similar menstrual complaints/issues from the female patients I see every day.  Symptoms such as the ones you described – heavy bleeding or changes in menstrual flow, mood swings, irrepressible anger and near despair – are common symptoms of PMS.  And, though you didn’t mention your age, I can tell you that in most women the symptoms you described tend to worsen through their mid to late thirties and into their forties.

The good news is that you don’t have to continue to suffer.  I can offer you both hope and a solution.  A respected friend and medical colleague of mine, Joel Hargrove, M.D. , former Chief of Vanderbilt Medical Center’s Center for Reproductive Endocrinology, once told me:  “Randy, the cause of PMS is estrogen dominance, e.g. the imbalance of estrogen to progesterone levels that occurs with age and the shift in hormone production. To effectively treat PMS, you must eliminate the patients underlying condition of estrogen dominance.”

The first, and most important step in effectively treating PMS, is to balance out the aging body’s overabundance of estrogen with bio-identical progesterone cream.  I have many patients who, after just a few weeks on my Natural Balance Cream, report that their menstrual bleeding is lighter and their mood swings and irritability around and during their periods just went away.  I have had husband personally write me thank you notes and send me gift bags!  The first book Genie and I wrote together, FROM HORMONE HELL TO HORMONE HELL, outlines the medical science behind how bio-identical progesterone can treat estrogen dominance and eliminate PMS symptoms in simple terms every woman – and man -can understand.

In addition, you can accelerate your body’s return to optimal hormone balance via foods and supplements that will help you eliminate extra estrogen naturally through the feces.  I call this my 3-Step Belly Flat program(TM) which Genie (my wife, co-author and co-founder of The Natural Hormone Institute of America) and I outline in detail in our new bestselling book FROM BELLY FAT TO BELLY FLAT.

Wendi, I am confident that if you follow our 3-Step Belly Flat plan(TM) you will replace that “inbred hillbilly with knives” with your own version of “Gone with the Wind’s sweet and calm Miss Melanie”.

We Wish You WELL!

It's so good to get a book that explains why people get belly fat as they get older and I wish I had read this book when I was in my 30's! There is a solution to this problem! I would recommend this book for anyone who has started getting the stubbord belly fat or who wants to know how to avoid it. The information given in this book is right on! I had already been doing many of the necessary things listed but have incorporated a few other key things that I did not know and I've already seen a difference in only 2 weeks. A very informative and educational must-read book!

5.0 out of 5 starsLADIES - DOMINATE YOUR ESTROGEN!, March 17, 2008 By Ming - See all my reviews

Have you wondered why, no matter what you do, you cannot lose the weight around your middle? Dr. Randolph answers this question by targeting hormones - "estrogen dominance" - as the culprit, not calories, carbs, or lack of crunches. He provides a 3-step plan consisting of exercise, natural progesterone supplementation, and an anti-estrogenic diet. The hormone-balancing diet includes ten critical foods such as fiber, citrus, and cruciferous vegetables, and a number of vitamins and key supplements such as calcium-magnesium and DHEA. The book focuses on women over thirty.

The book includes a one-month menu with meals such as: Grilled Salmon with Dill and Lemon; Crab Cakes; Grapefruit and Avocado Salad; Flaxseed and Fruit Smoothie; Garlic Chickpeas and Pasta; Lemon-Curry Cauliflower and Kale; Lentil, Carrot, and Turnip Stew; and Not Your Ordinary Tuna Salad.

The contents of the book include:
Part 1. Where Your Belly Fat Came From and Why It Won't Budge
1. Estrogen Dominance
2. Are You Estrogen Dominant?

Part 2. The Three-Step Plan to Balance Your Hormones and Whittle Your Middle
3. Step 1: Eat Foods That Balance Your Hormones
4. Step 2: Use Progesterone--the Simple Way to a Flat Belly
5. Take the Right Supplements to Support, Not Sabotage Your Hormone Balance

Part 3. Keeping That Flat Belly for Life
6. Keeping Weight Off in the Real World
7. The 80-20 Rule
8. The "Flat Belly for Life" Recipe Collection

This book draws a connection between belly bulge and hormone imbalance and seems to work for many women. The author explains that age-related decrease in progesterone production causes the body to become estrogen dominant, which leads to increased body fat, and fat tissue produces and stores more estrogen. Simultaneously, body fat contains an enzyme that converts adrenal steroids into estrogen. Making things worse, when you are in an estrogen dominant state your body supposedly does not effectively use fat for energy compromising your body's ability to metabolize or burn body fat. The author further states that having high estrogen levels affects the distribution of body fat and predisposes the body to store fat around the abdomen. Why having a high level of estrogen would affect where fat is stored is unclear to me. It seems that if you lose enough body fat, your stomach will eventually go flat, providing you maintain good muscle control, good posture, avoid overeating, or eating bloat-causing foods.

Readers should enjoy the tasty hormone-balancing recipes, and I applaud the idea of balancing hormones in a more natural way - especially using foods and vitamins! My only caveat is to check with a breast doctor before taking DHEA as I was specifically told by a breast cancer specialist not to take it. For a life-changing method of weight control, I also recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams
